[Poem written in 1744 on occasion of the Comet which then
appeared.]
Descend, Urania, and inspire my verse,
I raise my song to sing your kindred stars;
I aim to rove where glittering comets stray,
Trace the bright wand'rers thro' th' aetherial way,
And all round th' Almighty power proclaim,
Where words can roll or suns incessant flame.
